The centre, located on Level 3 at 533 Kingsway Miranda, represents an entire floor, over 1,000 square metres, of the recently constructed, five-storey, custom-built CCA Specialist Medical Centre.
With tree-top views of the Shire and the city skyline, adding to the calm and relaxing environment. It is not intimidating, cold or clinical and it does not look or smell like a hospital, with comforting deep blue and purple decor.
The building was constructed in 2014 and the Southside Cancer Care Centre was operational soon after. On July 25, 2017 His Excellency General The Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Ret’d), Governor of New South Wales officially opened the centre with The Honourable Scott Morrison MP, Cr Carmelo Pesce, Mayor of Sutherland, specialists, general practitioners and other distinguished guests in attendance.
The clinic is complete with a full range of complementary services including radiology, pathology and pharmacy. With time and convenience two of the advantages of having an entire floor devoted to looking after patients undergoing cancer treatment. The onsite pathology laboratory can process a patient’s blood sample on-site in only a few minutes, which goes a long way to eliminating patient stress.
When patients are undergoing chemotherapy, we can take a blood count just before each treatment. If it is too low, then chemotherapy can’t go ahead, but some parts of the blood regenerate every 24 hours so by being able to recheck the blood on the day of treatment we are able to maintain the treatment schedule without delays. The lab gives them the answers straight away, without patients having to wait for hours as is common elsewhere.
Our doctors participate in multidisciplinary peer-to-peer knowledge sharing of each patient’s case. This ensures patients receive the benefit and support of a senior team with a wide variety of specialities and experiences between them. They are also at the forefront of clinical trials and research.
Southside Cancer Care Centre is designed specifically for the people of Sutherland Shire. It is small enough to be individual and personal but big enough to participate in and draw upon world-leading clinical trials and research.
